Caprock Canyon State Park and Trailway

General

Up in the Texas Panhandle, the Caprock Canyons State Park provides a rugged backdrop for semi-desert hiking and backpacking.  Known for herds of bison and bats, the property has many opportunities for exploring, camping & hiking.  Between the main Caprock Canyon SP unit and the Rail-to-Trails footpath, the combined properties have about 90 miles of hiking trail.

Trail Notes

Trailway

The mostly level 64-mile Trailway is a rails-to-trails project that passes near the main Caprock Canyon State Park.  The Trailway passes through the Clarity Tunnel which is home for up to 500,000 bats.  Camping permits required.  Camping is permitted anywhere along the Trailway (4 Person maximum), and no campfires are permitted.  Most designated Primitive camps include a comfort station.  Water may be available at some primitive camps, but park literature advises that no water should be expected.

Caprock Canyon Trails

The main Caprock Canyon SP unit has a network of about 25 miles of multi-use trails that offer many opportunities for loop hikes.  Designated primitive campsites (most with with comfort stations) are distributed throughout the system.  Trails intersect with the tent & developed camping locations.  Trails may be difficult and rugged.
