PRESCRIBED BURN INFORMATION

LSHT MAPS & SHNF COMPARTMENTS

Section maps of the Lone Star Trail are tabulated below with Sam Houston National Forest Compartment Overly.  A compartment is an administrative subunit in the National Forest which may be used for defining timber harvests, prescribed burns, or other forest management activities.

USFS BURN TRACKER - PUBLIC VIEWER

The USFS provides a GIS burn tracker so you can see planned burns and burn status.  View the Prescribed Burn Tracker on the USFS website.  Prescribed burns are controlled applications of fire to meet resource management objectives such as hazardous fuel reduction and wildlife habitat restoration.  Specialists in the areas of fire management, silviculture, hydrology, etc., work together to ensure that the "prescription" is the right thing to do at the right time.  These projects promote landscape resiliency by reducing heavy fuel loads and minimizing the potential for severe wildfires in the future.

Hikers should be aware that prescribed burns may be encountered.  February through May is the most favorable burn season, and the USFS may conduct burns in the fall if objectives have not been met for the year.

Prescribed burn extents are shown on the tracker and colors indicate the burn status, as in the image below.
