Annual Volunteer Renewal - NEW PROCEDURE

Karl Van Scyoc | Published on 9/18/2025
NO MORE ELECTRONIC SIGNATURES!

October 1 is the usual time that Trail Volunteers update agreements with the USFS and reconnect with the Club.  This year, things are MUCH, MUCH, easier.  Our Volunteer page will update on October 1 with detailed instructions, but here is the summary:

FIRST:  Confirm your agreements with the USFS/Coalition (After October 1)
If you hold an approved Volunteer Service Agreement (October 2024-October 2025), you will not have to complete a VSA form with the USFS/Coalition this year. In fact you do nothing regarding VSAs!
If you are a new or lapsed volunteer, please FIRST visit the Sam Houston Trails Coalition  Website and complete a VSA according to instructions there.
If you are minor under 18 years of age, you will need an individual VSA form. Visit the Sam Houston Trails Coalition  Website and complete a VSA according to instructions there.

SECOND:  Complete Volunteer Registration Form (Club Website, After October 1)

All volunteers for Club Workdays must complete the Club Volunteer Registration Form.  A NEW link to the Volunteer Registration Form will be available on the Volunteer page on October 1.  All volunteers on Club Workdays will complete the Volunteer Registration Form annually so we keep up to date on your contact information and volunteer preferences.  This form also is needed to make you eligible for workday signups.

THIRD:  Sign up for a Workday!

We have a flurry of Workdays scheduled right now scheduled out for almost two months.  October is generally a crazy transitional time for Trail Volunteers, and we will allow about 6 weeks for you to make the transition to this new method.  After that, we will be a little more picky about adhering to the process.  If you completed the two tasks above, you will be able to signup for a work day with just a little information and a few clicks.

The LSHT is a wonderful place, and this year in particular has been challenging to keep up with maintenance.  The regular rains have kept the forest understory growing and encroaching the trail.  We need volunteers to beat that all back.  And to our faithful volunteers who regularly hit the trail, thank you for your dedication.  Your work improves the trail, but most importantly, improves the hiker experience.  Check out a few of our recent blog posts and and you'll see how much you make a difference!
